Hugo migration notes

As promised (threatened?) previously here’s the follow up post about the migration to Hugo. There’s a multitude of posts 1 2 3 covering the why and how of swapping, so I won’t rehash all of that. Instead I want to cover some of the workarounds and processes I went through converting this site. Some extra context, in the theme of docker-ing all the things, I run my two hugo dev sites and VSCode editor in dockers (potentially worth a post on it’s own, this one’s long enough), so the compose files differ a little from stock. ...

Long time, no post

Long time, no post. It’s been a while, between burnout (oof), trips to Japan (nice), the pandemic (oof 2), and some life (shit happens) things and a bit more travelling, things have been up and down. Meantime my foray into homelabbing has gone from synology NAS running packages, to a bigger one, to Docker-all-the-things, which now seems fortuitous in light of the recent synology shenanigans.1 2 The next upgrade is likely going back to reusing old PCs in modern high storage capacity cases. ...

Site Updates

It’s that time again. The current theme has served me well over the years, but it is not so friendly for mobile. The name Longbow’s Lair, has also run its course, and it’s time to re-brand it. Other than the name and theme though, most things won’t change. Oh and look out for another post soon, with my collection of photos from my recent trip to Japan.

New look

..well sorta.. I updated WordPress recently, and with all the stuff they are adding to it, my old theme that I’d built from scratch was starting to crumble, so I’ve taken the easy option, and found a customisable theme and fiddled with it to match the old look, more or less.

Slight rearrange

I’ve had a reshuffle in layout terms, to coincide with the new revenue making ProjectWonderful ad boxes, and hopefully it’s as easy, or easier to navigate. The site zone’s that were on the left, are now in the bar above, and darken depending where you are, and a few boxes have moved. Oh and I bumped rslap up to v1.1, with a fix for comments and blank lines. Also EVE got a funky new trailer, which I’m slotting in here, simply because I can; ...

Fixing Wordpress' Gallery

It’s moderately well known that Wordpress’ gallery code, is not as robust as it could be in some cases. These have a tendency to manifest in XHTML / multi-column CSS layouts. There are two main issues; It inserts inline CSS into the middle of the page, which under XHTML is not good The gallery layout can do unusual things, including odd line breaks which can create large gaps after the first row, kill the template or other odd things It’s been bugging me for a while now, so I decided to do a bit of research to find some solutions, and figured it would be useful to post the results. ...

Ka-boom-boom

So the site fell off the net. It’s not like anyone actually cares.. right? -Technical stuff follows- In case you were wondering, my hoster’s fell a foul of the VPS issue a while back, they’ve now fixed that, but it’s taken some time to figure out what’s gone and what’s recoverable. Seems like the SQL DB’s have gone, and I was stupid and missed backing up. But all is not lost, this old backup will suffice for now, and I have the source for the other pages thanks to Google Cache. ...

Humour Returns

I managed to salvage my old humour section from site backups, they mostly (read; entirely) consist of lists of stupid things, that are mildly amusing. Feel free to suggest additions via the comments

Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging! Happy New Year! Well, a new year and another new site system :? Since Joomla 1.0 was out of date and changing to J1.5 would mean faffing about with the data anyway, I figured something less over-the-top would probably be nice. So this time it’s Wordpress, with all the stuff that comes with that.

New Site launch

No, not this site, but I recently setup and coded the new Merc.Inc RFO guild website. All of the info and front page stuff was self coded (except for the news post grabber, which was written by some clever person) If you ever need RF info, I suggest you give it a gander. :P The Site
